Just wondering if doing a RAID 0 with 7200 rpm HD's is really worth it, or is it better to wait for 10,000 rpm drives to become reasonable. Already doing IDE RAID 0 with WD 80G drives (I think they're 7,200 rpm).
I had a pair of SATA WD 1200JD's raided and it was pretty fast until one of the drives died that is. They sent a 1600JD to replace it and the 1200JD that didn't die right away started getting S.M.A.R.T. errors so it got RMA'd last month.
I'm waiting for the second 1600JD to come in from WD and as soon as it does I'll raid it and bench it an post the results here.
Here is an atto of 2 WD120's 7200 rpm Sata raid 0
This was run with some stuff running in the background and not recently defraged. Normaly reads and writes are real close and about 95-98 on the big end.
Wow! 2 120's failed on you? I've only had maybe one or two WD drives fail on me ever. Are the 120JD's prone to that, or did you just get lucky? Haven't benched my current yet. Where to get Atto? Free?
Yeah one just failed and the other was giving me S.M.A.R.T. errors but seemed to perform just fine but WD said better to not chance it and RMA'd it.
I'm either freakishly unlucky or WD had a bad run with the 1200JD's when those 2 were made, they were only 10 20 removed from each other by serial number.
Hey Rustynuts you can get attoHERE
Madmat and I both had WD120's die at about the same time. must have been the same lot. Mine was back around Christmas and I beleive Mats was just before that. So thats 3 in a relativley short period from a small group.

Edit Oh ya, change "Total length" to 32mb. Leave the rest at default.
Found it!, ran a test at 32. Mines a little faster at the small end, but way slower at the big. Max'd out at 60.5k write and 53.2 read. Sorry, how do you take a screen shot? Never done that. Had to post as pdf.

Where are you at now with the IDE setup ?
