Alt key causes chaos...

edited April 2004 in Hardware
Hi, when I hit the LEFT ALT key my computer will close all open windows.
If I hit the Right ALT key it will goto STANDBY mode...
I can't even use CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot my computer...

I have never assigned HOTKEYS.
I have scanned with 3 different anti virus programs, ie , Norton, Mcaffee, and an online one.
I have run SPYBOT and other progrmas to search for spyware,.

Nothing turns up and NOBODY I have talked to can figure this thing out..
I am not a complete neophyte on the computer..
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you very much for reading,

Matt

You might check the settings in bios for your motherboard.
If the OS isn't set up as ACPI the APM (Advanced Power Management) can be wreaking havoc with you.

Not even a hunch... an unlikely possibility, check the registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout\Scancode Map
(just paste it here I guess)

Have you got a non-standard keyboard driver, say like a for a keyboard with function buttons, etc, installed on the system?

Um, how old are the keyboard drivers, and from the bottom of keyboard, what brand and model keyboard or FCC code if any does it have???

IT sounds like some of the preprogrammed functions are actually soemhow hooking to BIOS S3 functions.... WEIRD....

While we are at it, what version of Windows or other O\S is being used????

John D--- who had a Keytronics and a Logitech related thing (pre-current Logitech, back before they made mice) do some awful WEIRD stuff to the APM functions even before advanced PM came into being.... BIOS basicly, for whatever reason, thought keyboard was talking to IT and did similar things....

Try uninstalling the keyboard software / drivers. Reboot and then try the ALT keys. If you still have the problem, then we know it is not an issue with the multi-function keyboard. If the problem goes away, we know that the problem lays with that unit, somehow the driver is sensing the ALT key as one of the function buttons (close all, or suspend, depending which ALT key is pressed.) That is my suspicion, and disabling that software temporarily will confirm or reject it pretty easily.

If it is the keyborad software, you will have to pursue it with the manufacturers tech support.

    Everything Dexter said.

Plus, I just upgraded to a Logitech Elite Kb. My previous KB (also w/ extra buttons) used to go whacko about every three months. I would uninstall the drivers, clean the registry of any trace of them, then reinstall. I'd then be set for another three months.

I came close to setting the process up as a "Scheduled Task". :vimp:

I uninstalled the Netmedia program the keyboard came with and downloaded their new Drivers from the Qtronix web site, but it still failed...
    GRR
    This is frustrating
    Thanks everyone for their help
I have also emailed their tech support

    Well dang it :(

I wonder if you have any background programs which may have set the ALT keys as shortcuts for something... Can you post a list of your active processes from your task manager?

Qtronix makes keyboards that do that quite often, when that happened to mine, the only solution was to buy another keyboard other than qtronix
