i helped my friend build this comp, and after putting all the hardwares into the case and get everything connected, we tried installing windowsxp

loaded default bios setting, booted with xp cd and went to set up the partitions and format, and then it copied some files, and then restart.
after restart and loading windows, it started the install process, and then i will show an error after 2 minutes into the process
the errors says fatal error, setup can not copy product catalog or something.

same error occured at the same place with different CD.

Tested the ram with memtest, and it passed.
what's the problem??

I've seen that before with a bad CPU.

Sounds like faulty install-media. Seeing as how it's a new system (hopefully it's not hardware related,) chances are that the Xp cd is dead. Have you tried making backup copies of the cd, and using those instead?

edit: Duh; scratch that. I forgot to read the last bit about different cds.

try a different drive. it sounds like drive/media problems.
I have a cd that will not install off of one of me drives (of course I try five times before I remember).
Old slow drives are more forgiving.

weird, the CD worked fine in another system with a different drive, this liteon dvd/cdrw combo drive is brand new, we will try that after school is out or something, and see how it goes.

Take your system down to the barebones, i.e., cpu, vidcard, ram, and try the install. Add one pci card in at a time after winxp installs. If that doesn't work try substituting different components. If you have a spare proc laying around, try it. Do this to eliminate as many differents parts of the computer as you can. I suspect bad cpu along with prime. Cpu usually gives "irq not or less equal" usually though. Try a different hard drive to see if may possibly be a problem with the copying of files to it. Go through the install process again and ensure that when you format the hard drive you choose the "complete" process instead of the "quick" process.

problem solved, it was after i format the drive, and windows was cpying setup files, it copied some bad files i think, so i booted from cd again, and then formatted the drive again, and recopied the files, and now windows installation goes fine.

I am having a similar problem. When I format the drive and it copies the files it has to retry on certain files like 5 times before it will work then it gives me a fatal error during the winxp install.

After my first post I had probs installing win xp on the last of my farm nodes. It wound up being bad hard drives. Try using a diff hard drive to see if the one you have has bad sectors or other hard drive probs.

We just had this happen last week on a computer on our workbench at the office - it turned out to be a bad processor. We replaced the processor and it worked like a charm.

Um, check the XP Install CD for scratches on it, fingerprints, etc. Do not know how many times I had to clean dust off a CD, or fingerprints. Retry can be reading or writing. distilled water spritzed on it, then a gentle wipe from center out to edge (not in a circle round the CD) for each part of CD with a soft and dry cloth. Also, every once in a while, had to clean the dang drive laser lense with a Laser Lense Cleaning CD (Maxell Laser Lense cleaning CD is my favorite for this).

Yes, it could be HD also, but lets do the cheap and easy things first.... :D

I had this same problem before with several systems I built.
From my experience, it's related to either A) bad RAM; or
    B) an incompatibility/pickiness of the motherboard for the RAM.

The common symptom is: while installing WinXP, it gives you a
file error while trying to install it, usually a .dll .

If what you just did work - then more power to you. But if weird
things start to happen (reboot while running media player, app
hangs, etc) - then you might want to test out another stick of
RAM. In 6 out of 6 of the systems, this was the cure.

    Good luck!
