vmm32.vxd problems

We just got over a virus problem (W32.Sator@mm), and it turned most or all of our .exe's to .vxds, and then made another .exe (posing as the real one) that would confuse windows and cause it to mess up. So whenever we'd run any kind of .exe it would give an error message.
Anyway, my dad was changing a whole bunch of .vxd's back to .exes (as per my instructions), and he accidentally changed vmm32.vxd (the windows loader) to .exe, which made the whole computer go to hell. After a few hours we were able to get the system up and running, but now we can't connect to the internet correctly. Internet explorer is screwey and doesn't want to display anything, and the computer recognizes it's connected to an active modem (we have an external westell modem), but it doesn't connect to anything (games, browers, nothing!). I think it's vmm32.vxd, since the modem uses the file in it's drivers, and because the modem will work on my computer, but not my dad's.
What should we do to fix vmm32? We've tried reintalling, disabling all firewalls, and nothing works. Plus, are there any other possibilities for the cause of this problem? Thanks in advance!!!
