Graphics Problems

Hey Folks,

I just built a new system for a friend of mine... got a real problem. The graphics when running games are absolutely hideous. I've never used the newer ATi cards, always been an nVidia fan. Here's what he's running... any thoughts as to what to change or update to get these games to run better?

P4 2.80c GHZ 800MHz FSB
Asus P4P800
2 x Kingston PC3200 512MB DDR
WD 120GB SATA HDD
Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB

I'm using the latest video drivers, on a WinXP Pro OS and DirectX 9.

Depends on the budget. Can we get a number? Make sure you have the games running in OpenGL mode and at a nice high resolution. Try messing around with AA + AF

Can you explain more about what you're experiencing? Are your framerates low? Or is the picture quality poor. Or both. Like Capown said, mess with the ATI Control Panel settings and change AA and AF to a higher setting. Increase your in game resolution.

Thanks, I'll pop by his house tomorrow and see what I can do with the settings.

As far as problems... frame rates are very low, quality is extremely poor, some games won't even run. For example, Star Wars Pod Racer, the bulk of the screen was pure white. He tried Grand Prix and says it's almost totally unplayable. Yet, Simpsons Hit & Run seems to run perfectly fine. 3DMark2001SE was scoring brutally low.

Make sure the card is installed correctly. It could be a bad card, but I would try all the other things before RMAing the card.
