Problems with 9600SE and Counter-Strike

edited November 2004 in Hardware
I recently finished building my new computer (last week) and have been having MAJOR problems while playing CS. Randomly, usually after about 5 minutes or so, my computer freezes completely and i have to restart it.
Stranger yet, I can run other, more advanced games perfectly fine. UT2K4, BF1942, C&C generals, all run fine. However i cant play more than 10 minutes in CS.

My system specs are:

ASUS A7V600 mobo
AMD athlon XP 2600+
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600SE
512mb of DDR400 RAM
350W power supply.

I have all the latest drivers for everything (to my knowledge, maybe i didnt download one that i need)

I have sufficient cooling with 2 extra fans as well as the 2 for the power supply and one for the CPU.

I have tried numerous reinstalls of steam and CS as well as reinstalling my entire graphics card.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Did you try turning the VPU Recover off. That always used to cause me problems in certain games but others would work fine.

I just tried turning the VPU recover off.

I was in the server for a good 30-40 seconds now before my game crashed. At least my whole comp didnt crash at that time though. Instead it returned to the desktop in 4 bit color and 640X480 resolution. After fixing this THEN it crashed. After restarting it said something about how the system has recovered from a serious error and hwo it has recovered from a unexpected restart. The unexpected error dialogue said that the cause of the problem may have been "radeon 9600 graphics drivers". Which is strange because i have the all updated.

Any other ideas on how to fix this problem?

EDIT: update on the current status of the problem. I just tried to play CS again. I am having the same problem(feezing comp) except now it doesnt even go to an error screen. It just restarts completely. This problem is so strange and random i dont know what to do. :\

Try adjusting the agp voltage if your motherboard supports it. Up it ever so slightly.

Make sure vpu recovery is off.\

Make sure fast writes are off in bios and in windows.

try adjusting the agp memory usage. set it to 64, if its at 64 up it to 128. Never go below 64.

Also try reverting back to older catalyst drivers... I recommend 3.8's, they were a good batch.

AGP Aperature should be 1/2 your system memory, or the greatest value supported by your BIOS that's closest to 1/2.

if you havnt tried it allready i would download driver cleaner and get an older version of the drivers. then try to reinstall them. it could work.
