New domains '.mobi' and '.xxx' under consideration

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
Ten organizations submitted applications to sponsor new Internet domains, including ".mobi" for mobile services and ".xxx" for adult content, the group that oversees key aspects of the global network said Friday.

[blockquote]The new domains could be approved as early as this year and would be the first major additions since 2000. Public comments on the applications will be accepted from April 1 through April 30, according to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.[/blockquote]

Personally, I agree there should be a .xxx domain to make it easier to filter out that sort of content from schools and such. Give 'em all a year to do redirects and then start pulling their registrations.

Who can make the judgement that a site is XXX then? Some will hide from it and resist the change.

I think so too keebs. If it shows bush (or shaved), I think it's xxx. Topless is borderline but I wouldn't slap it with xxx. And why didn't it reflect that I submitted the story? Bah

you can't force certain stuff to be under .xxx domains. that's censorship. who would decide what was xxx and what wasn't and where would they draw the line.

I'll tell you why you T-shirt making little fuss pot. It's because when I post news, I tend to check the submitted news after I've posted the reports I've correlated. Today this was the case, as I had already posted a report on this story by the time I had gotten round to checking the submitted news. So that's why I didn't give you submission credit.

Thanks for submitting it though, it really does help me out when people like yourself submits news. :)

Um... I think it's strange, but I was just telling my girlfriend yesterday (without hearing anything about this story) that there should be a .xxx domain just for porn sites (then we made jokes about .coc and .pus).

I have to say that I completely agree with Keebs. I don't see how it's censorship to migrate all porn sites over to .xxx from .com - they're not being denied public access, just placed in a more accurate domain. Saying it's censorship to place porn sites in .xxx is like saying it's censorship to place colleges in .edu instead of .com - it's not censorship, it just makes more sense to be more accurate.

I think .mobi is stupid, just like .cc - people are just more used to 3-letter domains... of course we'd run into trouble if they called it '.mob' instead...
