Apple delivers Xserve G5

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
After a month's delay, Apple has begun shipping its single-processor Xserve G5 server and plans to release the dual-processor version in April.

[blockquote]The Xserve G5 is an all-new version of Apple's 1U (1.75-inch-thick) rack-mount server. It is designed for jobs as simple as handling office e-mail or as complex as crunching numbers for biotech researchers. The Xserve G5 is based around IBM's PowerPC 970FX processor, which Apple calls the PowerPC G5.

The Inq: [link=http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14799]Appro launches most powerful Quad-1U Opteron server[/link]
APPRO, A DEVELOPER of high-density, high-performance servers, today launched the most powerful Quad Opteron server to date, the Appro 1142H, at CeBIT 2004.

The firm shoehorned FOUR AMD Opteron processors into a (1U) 1.75 inch high chassis which Tyan is showing off on its CeBIT stand.

Appro has two versions on offer - the 1142H-80 and the 1142H-82. The difference being that the -80 only supports up to 20 GB of memory (10 DIMM slots) and the -82 supports up 32 GB of memory (16 DIMM slots).

Appro claims its thermal management allows efficient cooling for the four processors on such a high-density platform. It claims sever reliability in video streaming, database applications, computational clustering and web and mail serving.

Since this product is being showcased on Tyan's CeBIT stand, it's safe to say that the motherboards that power Appro's new server come from the mainboard manufacturer. We suspect them to be the unreleased Thunder K8QS (S4880) and the Thunder K8QS Pro (S4882), we reported on [link=http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14669]here[/link].

Newisys used to have the smallest quad Opteron server in a 3U form factor. Now Appro has set the new standard that others will have to follow.

Appro says it will begin delivering the product in May. ยต
