thoughts on my future 2500+ set up

edited March 2004 in Hardware
Im planning to get a barton core 2500+ and overclock it.(hopefully i can even get it to 3200+ speed on my nf7s.) I also want to get the slk900a heatsink with a Panaflo 92mm Fan, Model "FBA09A12H" to cool the overclocked processor. Im not too sure what fan would be better. I want to keep it between 30-38 dba but get the most cfm out of it. Im open to any suggestion you guys might have too.
Also on another note i was planning to upgrade to 1 gig ram from my existing 512 pc3200, should i wait on this? i just finished reading something about the price of ram going up.
thanks

the smart fan 2 is a very popular choice with that thermalright HSF.

u can control the speed and it push lots of CFM, i believe some where around 70 to 80.

First of all, i would get the Moibile Barton 2400+/2500+/2600+ instead of the desktop Barton 2500+. The mobile chips are cheap, unlocked and excellent overclockers! I have heard that many people are getting 2.5ghz on air.

I also would get an 80mm ThermalTake SF2. I think it is rated at 44 dba full speed, but you can always adjust it. It pushes a ton of air and an 80mm will cool better than a 90/92mm. Sounds wierd, I know, but check out this thread......http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9964

As for the memory, if you can afford it, get it now before the prices rise. Some pc3500 or pc3700 will do nice with that mobile barton.

Yeah, get the Tt Smart-Fan II.
I have one myself, it makes quite a lot of noise.
    But the airflow is excellent.
It can be adjusted like leishi85 and ryko are saying.

I am considering an early retirement for my AXP 1800+ @ 2.25 GHz.
Would a Mobile Barton be a good choice?
My AXP wants too much power at this speed. (1.92)

go 80mm rather than 92mm and smartfan 2 is an excellent choice ...I know I'm just repeating but this stands repeating.
Also ...if you're thinking about buying ram now look at this article and it may help you to decide not to put it off too long http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/MailHome.asp?datePublish=2004/3/23&pages=A1&seq=2.
Also research and be that sure you can add to your present ram to achieve 1gig ...it may or may not work ...if it does and that is the plan you had in mind then I'd recommend matching your existing ram.
also ...I agree with the comment about the mobile processor ...it's the route I would go anyway.

disagree on the pc3700 part, they have some horrible timing. they just aren't made for the current amd based systems

If i get pc3500 will i have "issues" with my existing pc3200 ram when i start OCing it? (i dont want to buy more than 512mb of ram right now, limited budget)Who is making good OCable pc3500 right now? i looked and newegg isnt selling any crucial or corsair pc3500. Are they making it? Does the 3700 really have issues because i was looking at the Kingston HyperX after ryko suggestion.
SIDE NOTE: I have a stick of corsair(xms) pc3200 512mb and i was planning to get another of the same.

Also where can i find a cheap moblie 2500+? I looked on newegg and its $93 with 266 FSB, is this it? Does the moblie have lower fsb than the regular xp?
    thanks for the help.

When did you purchase that corsair xms? Can that memory run @ 5-2-2-2 at default fsb? If so I'd recommend picking up some Buffalo Pc3200 w/ winbond CH5 chips. I've got a few sticks of these and am currently very satisfied with both. Either corsair uses this memory for their pc3200/3500 sticks or they use some samsung that won't run as tight of timings.

My memory gets 218 fsb @ 5-3-2-2.0 2.6vdimm. I personally don't believe there is any reason to shell out for any corsair or ocz as they will all have the same or inferior chips as the buffalo I linked. Note: Make sure to purchase the Buffalo ram I linked to you. Other Buffalo pc3200 sticks come with inferior chips from the likes of micron and samsung.

There's no point in my opinion of buying computer hardware any other place than newegg. That's the cheapest you're gonna find the 2500-m. Don't worry about the fsb. They can go up much higher, chances are your northbridge is gonna limit your oc before your cpu does. Yes the mobile XP has a lower fsb than the other one, but there's truly no difference as your 2500-m will never boot at stock speeds. You can easily install it, boot up, hit delete, change fsb to 200 and multipler to 11 and you're set for the moment.

I know this is all somewhat confusing but definetly get the XP2500-M, SmartFan2, and Buffalo Pc3200 CH5.

I just re-read your original post. My bad---i thought you were looking for some different RAM. I would just match whatever you have now to keep things simple.
