Tex (SP2 related question) or anyone else

edited November 2005 in Science & Tech
Has anyone else had problems under SP2 when opening a folder containing video files in thumbnail mode?

Or, does anyone know how I can change the default view mode? (to list or something else?)

It's crashing mine every time...

It's quite a common problem under Windows XP in general. It is more than likely a codec related problem. I suggest you try and find out exactly what codec the video needs to be able to play and be viewed properly, and install it.

The easiest way to side step this issue though, at least temporarily, is to delete the thumb.ini file (or whatever) from the folder which upon opening after deletion should give you the time you need to change the folder view mode. This can be done by clicking on the ‘view’ menu on the folder Window and changing it to something other than ‘thumbnail’ view.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

I'm running the KLite Mega Codec Pack, I'll try reinstalling it, thanks Spinner!

    I'll keep you updated

On trying to reinstall I got a file access error, so I uninstalled the Mega Codec Pack and am now gonna try the regular full codec pack.

It is also a possibility that the video is just corrupted. I've had this myself many times before. Sometimes I can fix it, by updating my codec packs, other times I just have to bin them.

Let us know how you get on though.

    Cheers

Its in three different folders, its not a problem with any particular file. The pack didn't help. I'm gonna try the cardinal rule of troubleshooting here in a minute (reboot.)

    Thanks,

I had the very same error message when explorer tried to "thumbnail" several *.mov files. I reinstalled the Quicktime-alternative codec, and everything worked out fine.

Try using gspot to determine the codec in question, and if there are any rendering issues.

Or, you could try locating the *.ax file, and re-registering it:
    $ regsvr32 mpeg2dmx.ax

    Thanks,

I tried reregistering the file, no dice

I'm gonna remove QT alternative and see if that flies.

//EDIT: no dice on QT alt

///EDIT: Okay, I removed all my codec related stuff, it doesn't crash now.

It's running fine without any codec packs, but I'm running regcleaner anyway. I'll let everyone know

//EDIT: I'm dl-ing a fresh copy of the Mega Codec Pack. Hopefully all will be resolved soon.

After googling "Mpeg2dmx.ax" I found a solution in the Afterdawn forums. I just renamed it as "mpeg2dmx.ax.old" so that the system can't find it. If I figure out what codec it was, I'll let y'all know.

//EDIT: Its the Elecard Mpeg 2 Demultiplexer, version 2.0.84.30429 So if anyone has the file in a different version and wants to send it to me, I'll give that a shot...

Well, wild idea-- which will also do some things you do not want done, probably as it will globally change things for explorer and my iomputer listings until you change it BACK later, but.... Right click any folder other than the crashing one, in explorer.

Click Tools tab. Change in view, the view to details. Change the icons options if you can so that no icons are used. Click "apply to all folders." You just forced a global file folder listing. Explorer will crash if it has an unassociated icon called for in file, so you could possibly regregister the file type to another icon.

Wild guess, some file types can be linked to web info, but missing icon for a registered file type will definitely do this. The only other way I know is to reassociate the file type in the registry, to unknown file type (remove association entry). Then file gets the unknown icon hooked to it. If this last thing works, you might have a corrupt or missing icon, would then look for gremlins on box as some viruses do play with files of type .ico (icon file type).

Let it think. NOW, try to open your folder

Question: Has anyone had problems/crashes in winXP SP2 when opening a folder containing video files in thumbnail mode?

Problem: If you use K-lite's GSpot, you will see that the crash is caused by a call to the file 'c:\windows\system32\mpeg2dmx.ax'.

Solution: Rename 'mpeg2dmx.ax' to 'mpeg2dmx.ax.old'. Happy thumbnailing!

True, you just removed Windows ability to convert mpeg2 to dmx (or display mpeg2's with DMX extension parsed content also present) with that fix, also. That was a conversion codec you unhooked by sending it into essentilly no-mans land as far as Windows knows. It fixed the directory error, but had other consequences. To get the conversion codec back, you get to reload it, and that codec is either corrupt or viral. I've killed virals in that file type, type .ax, before.

This happened to me today. I have over 150 different folders in My Pictures folder.

This did not occur to me until I installed Quicktime with Itunes . Related? Who knows. Windows is known not to play well with other codecs installed.

I was able to isolate it to a folder with 2 avi files that were created via cam studio several years ago. I deleted those 2 AVI files since I no longer needed them and the problem went away.

I don't know what the problem is, maybe it was related to the install of Quicktime or because the AVI files were created poorly.

Either way, for years I have been used to Windows not playing well with of Media codecs installed.

    Any solutions I appreciate it.

ok fixed. Apprently the file was just corrupted, Go to http://boligego.cjb.cc/index.php?data=download and download the boligego codec manager and extract installation file then delete the mpeg2dmx.ax from your system32 folder and replace it with the one you got from extracting. This fixed the problem for me hope this helps later.

How do you extract the installation file?

    Thanks.
