Tex (SP2 related question) or anyone else
Has anyone else had problems under SP2 when opening a folder containing video files in thumbnail mode?
Or, does anyone know how I can change the default view mode? (to list or something else?)
It's crashing mine every time...

The easiest way to side step this issue though, at least temporarily, is to delete the thumb.ini file (or whatever) from the folder which upon opening after deletion should give you the time you need to change the folder view mode. This can be done by clicking on the ‘view’ menu on the folder Window and changing it to something other than ‘thumbnail’ view.
Hope that helps.

I'll keep you updated
Let us know how you get on though.
Cheers
Thanks,
Try using gspot to determine the codec in question, and if there are any rendering issues.
Or, you could try locating the *.ax file, and re-registering it:
$ regsvr32 mpeg2dmx.ax
I tried reregistering the file, no dice
I'm gonna remove QT alternative and see if that flies.
//EDIT: no dice on QT alt
///EDIT: Okay, I removed all my codec related stuff, it doesn't crash now.
//EDIT: I'm dl-ing a fresh copy of the Mega Codec Pack. Hopefully all will be resolved soon.
//EDIT: Its the Elecard Mpeg 2 Demultiplexer, version 2.0.84.30429 So if anyone has the file in a different version and wants to send it to me, I'll give that a shot...
Click Tools tab. Change in view, the view to details. Change the icons options if you can so that no icons are used. Click "apply to all folders." You just forced a global file folder listing. Explorer will crash if it has an unassociated icon called for in file, so you could possibly regregister the file type to another icon.
Wild guess, some file types can be linked to web info, but missing icon for a registered file type will definitely do this. The only other way I know is to reassociate the file type in the registry, to unknown file type (remove association entry). Then file gets the unknown icon hooked to it. If this last thing works, you might have a corrupt or missing icon, would then look for gremlins on box as some viruses do play with files of type .ico (icon file type).
Let it think. NOW, try to open your folder
Problem: If you use K-lite's GSpot, you will see that the crash is caused by a call to the file 'c:\windows\system32\mpeg2dmx.ax'.
Solution: Rename 'mpeg2dmx.ax' to 'mpeg2dmx.ax.old'. Happy thumbnailing!
This did not occur to me until I installed Quicktime with Itunes . Related? Who knows. Windows is known not to play well with other codecs installed.
I was able to isolate it to a folder with 2 avi files that were created via cam studio several years ago. I deleted those 2 AVI files since I no longer needed them and the problem went away.
I don't know what the problem is, maybe it was related to the install of Quicktime or because the AVI files were created poorly.
Either way, for years I have been used to Windows not playing well with of Media codecs installed.
Any solutions I appreciate it.
How do you extract the installation file?
Thanks.
