I'm trying to re-install an o/s on a HP Omnibook 510 laptop. I need to get into the bios but its asking for a password. Searched the web for help but to no avail so can anyone here help.

I cant re-install xp until the hard drive is wiped & it wont let me wipe the hard drive.

Ta

Did you try using a straightened paper clip to push through the hole in the on/off button on the left side of the computer? This should reset the computer and I believe the BIOS as well.

Is there a "Clear Bios" jumper on the laptop? If you can find it, set the jumper to clear the bios and get into the system. At least, that SHOULD work. If not, just take out the button battery inside.

Tell me if this works, b/c I havent ever had the chance to work with laptops, and would like to know if I'm right.

Might want to contact HP on that one, laptop bioses are hard to crack.

Yep I'm fast discovering this. It appears the password is held on separate eeprom chip that has to be re-flashed if you want to reset the password.

Re-flashing the bios doesn't work nor does resetting the lappy using the paper clip. However using a program called ibios, I've managed to confuse the lappy & I've now been able to reformat the hard drive & install XP. So thanks all for the suggestions
