Curious...F@H and Restore.

Just curious to know. If it is necessary to do a restore on your puter, what effect does it have on the unit(s) being folded at that time?

In the past we have had our fair share of problems and had a need to do a Restore. Now we are folding, we have been fortunate not to have to do a restore, but you never know.

Please, no heavy duty technical answers as knowledge is good for basic's only, lol. :-/

I'm not sure if it'll affect F@H. I could see that it might if you're using the GUI version because of registry entries but largely I am unsure. :confused2

restore shouldn't have any effect on F@H.

Something to watch out for that caught me out, working on the BIOS.

I was attempting some overclocking and as usual had to clear CMOS. Forgot to reset the date for a while and carried on folding as usual.

When I finally set the date, F@H thought I had been a couple of years on the WU and sent it in incomplete. :sad2:

You learn all the time in this game.

    Cheers

As long as you haven't updated the client and/or core you should be fine. For instance, if you were running version 4.0 and your restore plugged back in version 3.24 it might have a problem.

To be safe, just shut down the program before you run SR and copy your C:\Program Files\Folding@Home folder to another location. After the restore just copy it back.

Thanks for those replies guys. I had the thought of copying the relevant files/folders as backup aswell. Especially now we are getting some 160 pointers, i'd hate to lose those.

Sally's main computer decided to play up the other day and she lost one of the 858,859's. Don't know what went wrong as i was at the mine working, just do know it did not require a restore at that time.

Going through her daily points production, it shows a lower than average dip which we are trying to prevent from happening. Competition is fierce so we need to keep on our toes, lol.

    Thanks again

I put Folding folders on the desktop - when I am going to mess with that box or blade, I close the folding program ( Control C ) then I cut it from the desktop and paste it onto my Lexar Jump Drive that goes in the USB port. Keeps it safe until I put it back. I am re-installing XP-Home on a friends computer right now and the Jump Drive is sitting right on the desk in front of me. Jack
