No Longhorn Until 2006...at the Earliest

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
In an interview with "Computerworld," Microsoft Senior Vice President Bob Muglia revealed that the next major version of Windows (code-named Longhorn) won't ship until 2006 at the earliest, confirming the opinions of analysts and others familiar with the company's problem of shipping products on schedule.

[blockquote]"2006 is the earliest time frame we're looking at [for Longhorn]," Muglia said, suggesting that perhaps 2007 is a more accurate date. "[The client and server versions of Longhorn] will ship at different times. Clients need slightly less bake time than servers do." [/blockquote]

So that means it'll be even longer till those with 64 bit chips to use them to their full potential?

Well, it took 10 years before the 386 could use all 32 bits...

If i understand it correctly longhorn will have 64bit but so will windows xp 64 which will be out sometime this year. No need to wait for longhorn for that.

Why do you say that? I'm extremely looking forward to its release. Whenever that may be.

Actually I'm glad a Microsoft OS release is taking this long. Less bugs at launch, and I'm eagerly awaiting their new file system amongst other improvements they've made.

I know a guy whos using a leaked version (I know him; not neccessarily me..) and he complains about the large mem-usage (300-400) on average. 2006 would be a suitable date for this kind of resource-hungry o/s.

@LiQuid: Gentoo is da shiznizz. Stage 1 + cflags + tailored installation + patience = power/efficiency. Gentoo resurrects otherwise-obsolete hardware.
