Testdrive Windows Update V5 Beta

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
It would seem Windows Update V5 Beta is open to all. Please however read [link=http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?s=8ed9b73fb89ad821e9fcb5ba376d411b&showtopic=153093&st=15]this[/link] thread before proceeding to try it out.

[blockquote]All you have to do is is click "I have read the preceding information and confirm that I am currently a registered Microsoft Windows Update Beta user" and you can use the new Windows Update. [/blockquote]

Enable autmatic updates and I bet it disspaears. You don't have to keep it on but just enable it and go get your updates. Don't know if its a new "feature" or classified as a bug... But... I had 3 computers here getting teh same error and it fixed all 3.

I searched the web for the error number with google and found the solution

And this is not something open to all users. Its open to the registered Windows beta users that they have INVITED to help beta the v5 update. When you click the link they verify it. Or it's also a part of XP SP2 RC1 and if your testing THAT you can access it also and SP2 RC1 is open to the public for download

The new automatic updates does not even tell you what its installing anymore. And it will shut down your computer without asking when the updates are done.

I only enable it long enough to manualy use windows update and then turn it off. I never want MS to update my machine without me choosing when and what are updated.

This is one of the like 10 most common win update errors.

    Here is the Microsoft explanation

    Problem Description:
Verify Full Control permissions on the Windows Update registry key

    Resolutions:
    To view the registry
    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Click on RUN
    3. In the Open box type “regedit” (without quotes)
    4. Click Ok
    5. The Registry Editor will open

    *WARNING*

Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk

    6. The Registry Editor will open, navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

    7. On the upper menu, click "Edit", and select Permissions from the drop-down list.
    8. Give Administrator (And / Or System) Full Control and Read permissions by checking the allow boxes. NOTE: In certain instances these boxes are grayed out. Insure that all accounts have appropriate permissions.
    9. Click "Apply", and then click "OK."
    10. Close the Registry Editor
