Intel Delaying LGA775 socket T until June

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
Despite the appearance at CeBIT of motherboards supporting the LGA775 socket T Pentium 4 processors, sources at Taiwan’s PC makers are claiming that the new 90nm chips will be generally available in June, rather than as originally scheduled in May.

[blockquote]The delay will give Intel more time to migrate its 0.13-micron process technology to 90nm and enable the launch to coincide with the chipmaker’s plans to employ a new numbering scheme for its processors beginning at the end of the second quarter, said the sources.[/blockquote]

Betcha that means Tejas which was supposed to be out in about 2 months (Is now slated for Spring 2005) is now re-slated for summer 05?

Wouldn't surprise me a bit, Thrax, with all the problems Intel is having with heat and power requirements with the 90 nm Pee 4's. Intel really has to concentrate on improving the leakage current problems on 90 nm because just changing the socket isn't going to make their present problems with Presshot just go away.

Rumors are circulating that Intel may drop speed as an feature altogether and concentrate instead on efficiency and adapt the Banias core to the desktop. I think it'll be interesting to see what becomes of that strategy if it is more than a rumor.

The shift to a performance rating system could easily allow them to do it, and we already know strongly enough that this is a probability (We even have model numbers).
