Gigabit or Firewire?

I will try to give detailed information...

I'll have 2 systems running soon. Both systems will have Firewire and a single Gigabit Ethernet connection. I also have a 10/100 Wireless Router/Firewall. The delima begins, I know this router does not allow me to do Gigabit networking.

Currently my 10/100 Router has my current system wired to it and my roomates computer connected wirelessly, the router is a 4 port router so it currently has 3 spare ports since my roomate is connected wirelessly.

I need to have the fastest connection possible between my current computer and the computer I am about to get setup. What do you guys recomend?

If I put a 10/100 PCI NIC in both of my computers and connected the 10/100 PCI NIC's to the router for the Internet, but also connect the two systems together through the Ggabit Ethenet ports built into the Motherboard, will it automatically select the fastest route when I send files between the two systems? Same question goes for Firewire.

Whew... I am not any good at explaining things.
