Question on power wires and cables??????

Is there anything to consider when routing cables and power wires (household voltage) such as a USB 2.0 running parallel to a 110v power cord? Will the power cord cause any loss or corruption issues? I am putting the finishing touches on my system and would like to know. TIA!

if i would have to guess, and if it's anything like cat 5 utp cables.

then i would say it's best not to put it near power lines. Because ordinary USB cables lacks the shielding that it's needed against interfrence from the power lines.

The USB 2.0 cables I am using are the heavy ones with braided wire around them. I'm hoping that would shield them.

IF teh braiding is grounded, yes, it will be very protective, just as Gladiator ATA cables get VERY little interference when the ground wires supplied are actually grounded. BUT, I have power cables, PS\2 Cables, and USB 2.0 rated cables running right next to each other for short distances. The USB cables are officially rated for USB 2.0 and have twisted pairs and that is enough for my runs, which do not exceed 10 feet.

For long runs, shielded cables next to a power cord would not be good. For short runs, like 12 feet or less, probably not much needed for most USB uses. Safest is to to keep all power cords away from data lines as much as possible, or use good cables like you appear to be doing, mtgoat.

Super duper uber coolness!!! :D The cables I am referring to are the ones that connect the outside ports to the MB and will only be running next to each other for just under 1 foot.

THOSE, I tend to use sticky-back zip tie points attached to case bottom right under bottom of window, and then zip tie to bottom of case near inner case edge (nearest Window, where they are hidden by bottom side panel lip of case in my case).

But, I have external cables going every which way.... :D

    Should be fine.

Cool as that is going to make my finished wiring much neater! :D

I've run network cables and USB2 cables, all good quality, next to 240V (UK) AC power lines and 100V line loudspeaker cables (schools & colleges), long runs, short runs, never had a problem. The interference problem is over-rated, imo.

Avoiding the problem lies in using good quality, preferably shielded, cables.
