Sure, hows this look to ya? I don't view at 1600x1200, but I tried making sure it looks good enough. It should cuase the image I used for Earth was very high resolution.

Upon looking at it here for some reason I can more easily see some errors I should try fixing, damned feathering I had THOUGHT I had kept clean...

Thanks Shorty, coming from you that means alot...

I feel I should do something... _MORE_ to that lens flare, but I guess the ordeal of actually using one is still screwing with my head! HAHA! I mean really, the lens flare, in my mind, has always been a big "NONO!" and I have been known to even close my browser immediatly upon merely seeing one anywhere.

And now I have used one... I feel like I just broke a Commandment or something.

Lens flares vary alot from "why bother?" to "oh dear, why on earth?".

What you have there (im sure Im not the only one who would agree) is a subtle use ;)

I understand your feeling on lens flares (and some other filter effects in general). Some people just seem to go overboard and completely rely on them to produce effects you could do with multiple layers, brightness, contrast & hues. How can you learn if it does it all for you? ;)

Look up Dogsoldier on these here forums, now that's one seriously talented guy. He's got skills Im still trying to get to.. Il be chasing you for help in a few months for sure ;D

hehe, yeah... things like "Shine" in After Effects you will see ALL over the place especially in EVERY single commercial out there it seems.

I gotta admit though, "Shine" is a very cool effect ;) I've used it more than once myself. I just don't like to go overboard on these things, including the style I'll use. I think I willbegin working on an Abstract peice now.

How can you define character if you do Photoshop 1,2,3 like everyone else ;)

Sure, use them.. but make them your own.. and never rely on them :)

Hehehe.. shine rocks.. but like you said, so overused.

Keep the work coming bud, we will tell ya if something isn't right without saying "dude, OMG that sucks ass" ;D

Maybe you'll like the magazine I made in Digital Publishing using Quark and Adobe InDesign... I wanted to make a Mag similar to Popular Mechanics and other Tech Mags... of course I did it on the JSF ;) It's only a couple pages, but quality :P Some of the Text is just jumbo though.

I am curious if this type of imagery is rampid around the net, if so I would rather be more original and just see if I can create something else, better.... with ships and lasers! lol

hrmmm... this scene rendered with a space station and ships flying around, with the dark side of the planet covered with visible artificial light from the surface. Looks like I have work to do! :type:

    Wow. Just... wow.

Some constructive criticism from the engineering major:
The sun would be out of the photo for that amount Earth to be lit. Try making a bunch of the lit part darker.
There will be lights on the dark side of the Earth wherever there are cities with more than 10,000 people. It should look like strands of pearls in the darkness along all the major roads, with tiny filaments forming rural streets.

The sun is in the right place on the horizon though, within 23 degrees N or S of the equator.

    Keep up the good work!

What is real and not real doesn't matter in art, what matters is how kick ass it looks ;)

I was looking through a library of images here at school and found a similar image to what I used, but with America in view, I may remake it again with that image, it should just be a simple exchange if I remember correctly. I am in school modeling an entire city in 3Ds Max for my Mech Animation ;) so when I get home I'll have my work cut out for me :D

    wee! Thanks guys!

RWB, that effect set is nice-- VERY nice. See what PS has in the way of lighting autoadjustments for overall lighting. To light the earth as you have, try moving sun about 1" on pic outward from earth, on a straight line, that will give you land masses more lit up.

For some ideas of real Earth pics from space and NEAR-space and heavily realistic lighting, try http://www.nasa.gov/ and get into the satellite and shuttle pics areas-- expect jumps to subsites. They have some high density shots that have the earth pics of what you are trying to do precanned, in the Press area. They ask that the copyright be left, but they are free to use.

BTW, the base pic of earth you are using looked like a from-the-moon (Apollo mission, NASA) shot blown up and enhanced. For THAT shot, sun was way off the pic behind and slightly to one side of the photographer.

Comment only. Usually when there is lens flare that isn't too extreme the spot isn't strictly round. Often it will be octagonal, since many mechanical shutters are eight leaved. You get an internal reflection in the lens.
I like the way that yours looks, but as you look at real pictures that is why they look different.

Just some constructive criticsm, I think the lens flare in the last version is too much, looks almost like a nuclear explosion on the earth's surface. Given the aspect ratio of the picture (wide) the lens flare should be less round, more elongated. What plug-in are you using for the lens falare? Can you stretch and fade it?

Thanks, but I got a couple things...

First, I am having a difficult time figuring out what your talking about with where the sun is compaired to the light on the planet... I have already said twice I believe that this was for ****s and giggles; worded differently of course ;)

Second, I am calling it quits on this image... onto new and better things. But I'll try to keep the comprehencible info remembered... Ageek, I will TRY... however his posts may actually be TOO informative that it actually gets confusing. My brain is ill equiped for that kinda thing LOL!

Just sent off an email to Macromedia, hopefully I can get that licence number. Until then it is about that time... time for a reformat ;) Then I will _probably_ get some sleep.

Probably.... becuase my class for tomorrow has the rough cuts due for the documentary and I have been busy lately on other stuff, plus becuase of an ass in my class, I haven't been able to film all my shoots yet as he has hogged the camera 3 times as much as anyone else has becuase he doesn't prepare. God the books I can write on this guy.
