Intel Reverse-Engineered AMD64

edited April 2004 in Science & Tech
It has been reported that after investigating the instruction sets used by 64-bit chips from AMD and Intel, an industry analyst has concluded that Intel reverse-engineered the AMD64 instruction set to create its own 64-bit microprocessor architecture.

[blockquote]Tom Halfhill, an analyst at In-Stat/MDR in San Jose, said Monday that he had compared the instruction sets of AMD's 64-bit chips, called AMD64, with the 64-bit extensions to be used in the Intel Xeon processor and future desktop chips. The smoking gun, Halfhill said, was Intel's choice to mimic a decision AMD made in its early Opteron designs, and later reversed.

Are AMD scumbags for having reverse engineered x86? ;D

Inhel and amd has had an agreement to share instructions for years. It really doesn't make much sense to buy inhel-64 cpus at their jacked up prices when it's not even their technology I can see if they were going to sold at a reduced price. AMD is the innovator and Inhel is the imatator but if they can produce xeon64's that preform as well and cheaper I would consider buying a few but I would never pay the same as I would for an opteron.
