edited April 2004 in Science & Tech
Despite an expected short life cycle, Lite-On will start to offer 12x DVD Dual burners later this month.

[blockquote]In addition to 12x DVD Dual, Lite-On IT plans to offer 8x DVD+RW DL (dual-layer) in mid-April at the earliest, with the timing hinging on the availability of compatible double-layer DVD discs, Gong noted.[/blockquote]

yea but in 3 months 24X will be the norm with 32 ready to be released. If you can wait 6 more moths we should be seeing 40's and 52's soon. Its just like they did with the CD burners, once the speeds started increasing it wasn't no time before 52x's were selling for less than 50 bucks...

I'm like you... I want one but I think I'll try and hold out for the upper end of the speed scale...

How fast is a 52x DVD burner? Isn't that pushing ATA spec?

That is probably so because we haven't seen any increas in speeds of CD's or CDR drives. ATA limits could be one reason although I read that above 52x the media is the problem. According to one article I read a while back much beyond 52x and the cds want to disinergrate/explode in the drive...

Going by 16x DVD= 22160KB/sec, a 52x DVD would be moving data at a rate of 72020KB/sec, or roughly 70MB/sec. You're going to need an 80-conductor cable for this one :D.

Perhaps we will finaly see sata optical drives. Then controller speed wont be a problem. :D But i have heard that discs can fly apart when you get close to 52x and above so it prolly wont go faster than that. :( I could take 32x max anyday as long as i don't have to worry about discs breaking in the drive. :)

i'll probably pick up one of the 8x dual layer drives, cause im eating up HD space and it'd be nice to back things up (cd's are far too small)
