17in or 19in LCD?

I'd like to get a new LCD that I'll also probably use as a TV periodically. I'm looking at maybe a samsung. I was just wondering what everyone's opinions were on the cost to size ratio. Would a 19in be worth the extra 200 or so dollars that it costs?

I think you would be just as satisfied with the 17"er ...I read in another thread where the difference is only like 1/2"? I think it was nightshade or perhaps someone else I can't remember. :fold:

ps: also consider whether you want dvi or analog.

I think you should go with a 19" LCD. I think it is equivalent to a 21" monitor (that is around 19" viewable). So it is worth the extra $200.

What ever model you are looking at, make sure to compare the actual visible area (some LCD guys are starting to play that game too) and the native resolution (not maximum). They look hte best at the native you want to make sure that it matches what you intend to run.

csimon I believe you are referring to mm's post in this thread http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=942 which doesn't really apply here.

I do want dvi though so I'm considering these 17" models (all at newegg)
    Samsung 172t $555
    Hitachi CML174SXWB $454

    and these 19" models
    Samsung 191t $659
    Hitachi CML190SXWB $649
    Sceptre X9g-Komodo II $549

I don't really know much about Sceptre but it got good reviews. What would you choose?

depends ...if I want quality for things like video/rendering I'd go samsung ...if I want good gaming performace I'd try the hitachi.

I would print out the specs of each and do a comparison of them.

I would definitely not sacrifice quality for quantity either if you catch my drift ...ie if the quality of the 17" outweighs the 19" I'd go that route ...I have both sizes and trust me the size difference doesn't matter when you sacrifice picture quality too much. :fold:

The last time that I checked there were only four mfg of flat panels. LG, Samsung, AU and Hyundai. Right now the last two are building the fastest and brightest displays.
If you line up the specs on a bunch of monitors you will see that they use only a few panels. You had might as well buy the least expensive one htat has the panel that you like.
I have been helping a friend shop and the Hyundia 17" looks hard to beat.
