USB printer and IRQ errors

OK heres the problem, and help would be greatly appreciated:

Dell Laptop running Windows 2000. BIOS allows no access to IRQ settings, but IRQ's can be seen from windows.

I tried to install a USB printer, a Canon Fax/Printer dealy, so I installed the drivers, hooked up the printer, and it reads installed. When you reboot the computer it gets to the "Windows is starting up" screen for windows 2k, then goes to blue screen with the message
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

IRQ 9 is the only one I saw with more than one device on it, those were:
ACPI Compliant system
Intel PCI 1225 Cardbus (this appears twice)
Intel PCI to USB Universal Bus Controller

If theres any more information you need to ponder this problem let me know...the only way to fix it again is to unplug the printer, boot in safe mode and uninstall it. then boot goes normally. thanks for any help you can provide.

Isn't the IRQL error a driver issue? Usually USB printers don't need a IRQ for printing.

Seen that error about 35 times.

30 solved by new ram. 5 by better processor cooling.

It's not a coincidence at this point.

I hate that error, it seems pretty specific but always points to the wrong thing. As Thrax said, it could be RAM or the CPU. When I get it it is usually a driver problem, either the drivers are in conflict with something (or just generally crappy,) or you did not install them "right" (not that you didn't install them properaly, but you know how fickel driver installs can be.) You could also try finding drivers for USB for the system.

BTW, I assume that other USB devices work fine on the system right?

Oh and some food for thought, irq's 2 and 9 are really the same irq. Just something I thought I would share since we were in the irq thing.

hehe thanks. i think thrax may have something but this is a laptop, so installing RAM and cooling might be a little out of my reach. other USB devices do work, they connect through a 4 port USB hub attached to the lappy's one USB port....could this be a problem? i'll try the driver thing...try reinstalling, and try finding new drivers. any other tips? thanks all, this is what i love about short-media =P

Have you tried install it directly to the lappy?
As always (well, almost) with usb, Install driver with just the cable plugged into the usb port, reboot, THEN connect the device.
Most hardware companys suggest that in their installing instructions.
