Video capture is very often a matter of more $$ = better quality. A better video card will capture better quailty video. Or an MPEG capture card if you want to spend a bit more money. How much money are you willing to spend to solve the problem?

You hook it up to the TV using your WinTV card, right?

I am curious as to the specs on your MPEG capture. What settings are you using for your MPEG capture? It may look good on your computer because the settings are optimized for VGA playback, but when played out to an NTSC monitor, the settings are not good enough.

Can you find out the settings for your MPEG capture? If not, capture a 15 second file, and PM me, I will send you a log in to my FTP site, and you can upload it to me. I will run it through my MPEG analysis tools (I deal in PRO MPEG hardware for a living :) ) and let you exactly what your MPEG is made of.

I would suspect the s-video-->rca adapter as a possible source of the problem. I have had the best results with either a s-video-->s-video or rca-->rca. Does you TV have s-video in? If not, i guess you don't have a choice but to use the adapter. Maybe you could try a different adapter?

I would also try a different s-video cable if you have one or are willing to purchase one. I saw huge improvement in my htpc when i broke down and bought a monster s-video cable for it. Best $35 bucks i have ever spent!

Isn't it true though that PC resolution will never look nearly as good on NTSC as it does on VGA or Digital?

I agree with ryko. I hooked up my pc to a tv temporarily and svideo to rca with an adapter looked extremely crappy. Then when I hooked it up to a tv with svideo input it was fine. I dunno how much a different adapter would help you, unless your tv has an svideo input. If it does, by all means, use it! And about what justin said, a tv's resolution is much lower than a computer's resolution, and certain tv's may not look as good as others when hooked up to a computer. See if you can't use another tv to hook up to, one with svideo input.

well my tv has only rca hook-ups no s-video. is there a video card i could use on my computer that would at least make the computer look a little better?

Games, video and the like should be ALRIGHT..... Text and most otherthings will look rough even at a low resolution from the PC. If you go high-def, then you would be alright but if you want to spend that much cash, get a projector and give yourself the true big screen experience. Your monitor is going to be your best friend until you can go s-video, and even then, it will be lacking for anything text based. Sorry man.... If you really want to look at something, I have an old GeForce 5200 that has an RCA out that could get it done for you but if you are looking for anything similar to the quality of your monitor, it ain't gonna happen....
