Is the unlocking of the Athlon XP Thoroughbred "B" and Barton on the nForce2:
1. A feature of the chipset?
2. A smart move by the mobo maker?

I have not found any clear info on this question.

Ahh yes, is it true that every NF2 mobo feature auto unlocking?

Its a smart move by the mobo maker. The NF7 and KD7 series boards have this 5 bit FID thing that allows you to overclock your CPU by multiplier.

    Ok
I got a bit confused reading on other sites.

They mentioned it as a feature of the chipset.

The 5bit fid makes higher multipliers available but it is not a part in the actual unlocking, is it?

    5bit fid goes from 5x to 22x
    4bit fid goes from ?x to 12.5x

It is because I am talking with this guy having a XP 2700+ and an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe he cannot change the multiplier at all, and he has tried different bioses.
    He is using bios 1004.

Dunno much about Asus boards, I am an Abit guy.
    :D

Only ABIT has it. It overides the CPU's multipliers by allowing you to control it.

I read that Soltek has it as well.
    Maybe Chaintech too.

    But it is unconfirmed.

    /me hugs his Abit NF7-S rev. 2.0.
    :respect:

After getting these facts I am truly happy I went with the Abit.
I was looking at the Zenith, though because of all the extra goodies.:p
You get a keychain with the Chaintech, that is cool.:D

Yeah, that's why I like my KD7-RAID. I also plan on updating to a NF7-S

Chaintech, Soltek, Asus, Abit, EPoX and Albatron all feature 5bit FID on nForce2 boards.
