THE VOLUME OF people attempting to patch up their Windows systems has put a severe strain on Microsoft's servers, it has transpired....

Netcraft reported that the Microsoft servers were struggling to meet demand, in these security conscious days.

Microsoft issued a whole batch of patches to tidy up holes in its version of Blackburn, Lancashire, as the Beatles song had it.

oops..

I was waiting for that one.
My home boxes on dial up aren't even worth updating right now. I'll have to wait for less traffic.

Um, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/ OR http://www.microsoft.com/security/ also has those packs as archives-- via a KB search and in some cases links from main security area pages right to the KB articles-- there are specific download hyperlinks listed about two-three screens down in each article. You can grab them on a box that can burn them to CD, and apply-- it is legal to backup your patches, but NOT to resell them.

NOTE, MS04-013 has three distinct, same-Q-numbered subpatches for it. One is for Outlook Express 5.5 SP2, one is for Outlook Express 6 before SP!, and one is for after Outlook Express 6 SP1 is installed or for folks who have already installed OE 6 SP1. So, you need patches BY O\S(s) you have for the others MS04-011, MS04-012, MS04-014), and then possibly all three versions of the Q patch for MS04-013. READ their KB articles if you do not want to wait. THEY ARE important enough that there are already multiple ways to get them.

I used the technet route yesterday, and then things really dragged and I kept getting the aps error page for half the links they had up. I could not get WindowsUpdate to even do an autosearch of path needs yesterday, and after letting the box sit while I had lunch and then sit for 15 min later, I went for the IT Professional package-grabbing route.

BTW, Microsoft mspx is now pretty good at autodefaulting to right area from Microsoft subsite raw AREA calls, so you do not need specific asp or mspx (these are XML 4.0 plus asp functionality tuned for it) location calls in URLs to get to these patches. Links all over Microsoft for them.
