Also both can surf the net from both, any ideas why its not working?

Have you made sure that Remote Desktop is enabled on the host computer and that your user account is in the Remote Users user group?

Also, when does it fail, do you actually get to the login screen or does it time out while establishing the connection?

Way to far ahead. He would not need ANY of that to be able to do things like pinging. If he can't even ping then there are more serious issues.

Bud: Did you set them both to the same subnet mask?

    Remote desktop according to M$

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gomobile/remotedesktop/default.asp

    OR

Go to Control Panel > System > Remote. You can also right-click My Computer (if the icon is shown on the desktop) and choose Properties.

Check the Allow Users to Connect Remotely to this Computer box.

Press the Select Remote Users button to configure who will be able to connect to the computer. The local administrator already has this power.

Press Add and type the name or group.

    Press OK twice.

If you made any changes, press the Apply button.

    Press OK.
