Microsoft makes their own virus scanner

Microsoft enters the virus detecting market with the pledge that it will not force future Windows users to run their new software, by claiming to have no intention of integrating the virus scanning software into their operating systems. All I can say is... we'll see.
The scanner will not be taken inside of Windows, but will be offered as stand-alone software. According to a spokesman of Microsoft it is unlikely that the history will repeat itself. The scanner will not be integrated in Windows and people are free to use it or not. The software package is one of the steps to make Windows a safer product.

Why don't they just make a better OS that is less vulnerable to virii and tojans?

And you just know that their scanner will be allowed to integrate with other software (Office, IE, OE, the OS) in ways that 3rd party apps aren't able to.

I can tell you the work around they will do. No integration means they can add another peice of software to their list of insanely priced peices of crap ;)

Of course they then charge for the virus updates, then realize the extra money is good and start charging for the Windows Update. ;)

And someone please inform me why *NIX has been around as long as windows and has not yet reached the status of Windows?

    Oh yes!

Because despite the bugs, and the flaws in Windows, which are probably there in different forms with each and every Linux distribution...There is one solid operating system, with very high flexibility, functionality, and more recently...Stability.

Stop bashing Windows. It gets annoying.
