Can I have the DSL?

I've been having to rip the DSL modem away from my dad's computer every time I want to just check e-mail or post on this forum. I've been telling my dad that networking is the way to go, but he's being stubborn and/or "not smart" about it. I've set up and fixed network connections in my school, so I'll be able to do it easy.

I figure I'll just eat the cost and buy it myself. What are good prices for a Wireless 802.11b router and PCI card(s)? And also, what is the best brand to go with?

I figure after I set the network up, I'll find a way to cut the bandwidth to his computer (did I say that right?). Then he'll have to come to ME for help.

MuaHahahaha!!!! :rarr:

I find Linksys to be the best brand.

Assume $80-110 for a WiFi Router, and $40-60 per card.

Good PCI wireless b cards are not cheap. Note, you can do this wired if you can run wires to Dad's room or yours from where modem is. For about $34.00 for router, ordinary NICs at about $12-20.00 each if your computer does not already have one-- wire should be Cat5E for long runs (I ran a line to my Mother's computer for a cable share to her from this exact router for about $25.00 wiring parts cost including wall plates and punchdown jacks from Home Depot), she had a 10\100 NIC on her slower computer). Netgear RP614. Compare to about $150.00 or more for a decent wireless router with two NICs if go with a cheap router.

The RP614 is a DSL\Broadband (Cable) Gateway that can be port secured and is remote managable via a browser (IE, Opera, or Mozilla) with password and login ID changablility. It is a four port router. Often all four ports are busy.

If you can run a cable it will be much cheaper than that.

Wow, I don't know if they would like me modifying the entire house for this...

I'd like to get a wired, and if I could manage it, I'd definetley get wired if the computers were closer together, since most of the PCs in the house have ethernet ports anyway.

Is it possible to have wired and wireless segments? Like having my dad's PC wirelessly connected to the router, and then having the other 2 PC's wired to the router? I'd probably need a hub then, I guess.

You can get a decent Wireless Router that has 4 data ports for cabling and a built-in WAP. Linksys makes a few models that are decent in this category, and they usually don't cost any more than a regular WAP.

Yes it is & very easy. On my linksys router I have 3 wired connections and space for one more plus 3 other pcs & laptops wirelessly connected. If you get a wi-fi router like the one Thrax suggested you wont need a hub.
