try 8x with fastwrites in smartgart off ...but on in bios
also check your system temps.
Also check to be sure you have any patches for FS that may be needed and check thu the readme to see if there are certain settings that give trouble.
I know that reading the docs isn't very fun but you might just find a solution.
Alright, card is installed, Latest official catalyst is installed.
However when I take a look at SMARTGART, it says CURRENT AGP SPEED: OFF
I have a Abit Nf7-S 2.0. Any idea what might be causing that?
Um.... Err... Any chance the BIOS defaulted to PCI first in setting the graphics adapter location.... That will cause bogs NO END.
Try looking for a setting that should say AGP and might now say PCI in relation to video, in the BIOS. I've been fighting with what looked like a video card lcokup, was NOT a video card lockup-- was aBIOS upgrade\flashing that reset the BIOS while flashing-- and the BIOS was happily looking for a PCI card rate card (which is at max AGP 4X).
BTW, with some boards, if you set AGP voltage to 1.7 V the board power control circuitry will happily steal wattage from CPU and\or RAM, and you get a lockup but it is the CPU or RAM barfing, and\or AGP power line overheating or the power circuitry draining caps too fast trying to overvoltage the APG card. Reset voltage, this time to 1.625 or 1.65 and see what happens.
NOTE: Concerning some boards, the docs tell you a max voltage, and they DO mean that voltage when they say so, +\- .035 to .050 volts (variable by board as to exactly how much). Never had an NFS7, run IC7-Max3's here now. But that is how they are, run AGP voltage over 1.65 volts and the board undervolts other things in acuality. This is not PSU, this is caps being drained too fast.

The chipset drivers for the mobo installed?
Smartgart is showing 8X on and fastwrites on now
More problems though
When I try to run FLight Simulator 2004, the computer locks up
When I ran my browser, and selectedt the options to download the ATI driver again, the computer locked up
When I tried to download 3DMark 04 from majorgeeks.com, computer locked up
Tried that again, computer locked up
CS/DoD, lockup
FS2004, lockup
Downloading 3Dmark from Majorgeeks.com lockup
Reinstalled ATI driver
Tried all three again, lockup
I'm starting to get really pissed off
~dodo
I used drivercleaner to make sure all the old ATI and Nvidia display drivers were gone
restarted, reinsalled ATI drivers
But the computer is still locking up
CS/DoD, FS2004, trying to download from majorgeeks

I disabled fastwrites, set AGP to 4X in the BIOS.
Still locked up.
I increased AGP voltage to 1.7, lockup
I just tried to watch a friggin DiVX video, lockup
arggggg
My machine refuses to complete a boot up.
Even when going into safe mode, machine reboots on its own.
I tried doing a repair installation, but I let it sit there for 30 minutes and there was no progress.
So I hope to God then when I get back it will magically be working.
If not I will have to reformat and reinstall. What a crap day

John D.
I had fiddled with the voltage anywhere but nothing.
It's too late now anyway. I've already reformatted and reinstalled. It'll take about a week for me to get back to the way I was
