MediaManMediaMan Powered by loose parts.
edited April 2004 in Hardware
FX5900/5950 owners...help me understand something here.

Download Shadermark 2.0 benchmark (requires DX 9.0) and run it. There should be a lot that it can't do. Of the 19 tests...only about half will complete.

http://www.shadermark.com/build1e.rar

I'm asking this as I can't quite put my finger on "why?" I'm writing a 5950 review and need to explain this. I'm not too familiar with NVIDIA cards...ATI will complete all the tests...but NVIDIA won't.

I'm assuming this is a hardware benchmark and some of the functions are handled by software for NVIDIA...thus the reason why NVIDIA doesn't complete all the tests...at least it didn't for me.

If the defaults are in 24bit mode nVidia won't do them as it only supports 16bit and 32bit precision in shader 2.0, that's part of the reason ATI spanks that ass in HL2 in that nVidia is stuck muddling along in 32bit while ATI is doing 24bit on the shader operations.

I may have posed a question that's too big to answer. Rumors abound with cheating and so on. It appears there isn't a simple answer. :(

Ah well, I dl'ed it and fired it up and got error logs stating what you had so I hit run and my screen went black then it went back to my desktop and all my icons were in two groups at the top of my screen, not much by way of a benchmark but a handy tool for organizing my icons at least. ;)

Thanks for the try Madmat...apologies for the crash. Did you have DX9 installed?

I think I wandered into a viper's nest of explanations. In order to explain my dilemna I have to explain AA...and of course FSAA...pixel and vertex shading...show examples...compare how ATI and NVIDIA handle adaptive filtering...explain pixels, shaders, textules, slopes, vertices....

Basically be able to build my own video card and games given the parts and software programs.

/me senses the graphics card water of explanations at about eye level and rising.

Hrm, my question is why my system doesn't run his benchmark at all... it just goes back to my desktop.

    I have a Radeon 9700 Pro

Same here - 9800 Pro/128 and it goes black and then back to desktop a few seconds later.

    Yes bad MM..bad.

    /me shakes head at MM.

Well since you have one of these cards now, would you be getting one of the new cards about to be release??? Come on buddy ol' pal.:D:D:D

Ah, that explains the bugginess, I guess a 1.77mb benchmark was too good to hope for, ah well, at least I can still tidy my desktop with it...nice grouping on that try.

NVIDIA are "interesting" to deal with. I'm on the vertical learning curve and I'm about 200 hours of instruction behind the game on this one.

I'm starting from the basic triangle and relearning everything from there. No benefit of a teacher either. Nose to the grindstone and google is my friend. (Also the printer...think I've worn one out already and I just bought it.)

And as far as NVIDIA shipping out 6800 or 7000 or 10,000 or whatever number they are going by? Dunno.

It should be the same with all NVIDIA products. There's something "missing" on NVIDIA products that's on ATI. I just can't quite put my finger on it.

    Lessee

Start with a triangle. That has verticies. Each vertex contains information about light/color/shading...triangles start to build polygons...polygons form shapes...shapes are skinned....a scene takes form...whoops...now there's culling going on....oh yes...what about distance reducing the number of polygons...Hmmm....now there's hidden objects...do these render or are they ignored?

Haven't even gotten to AA/AF/FSAA and FAA yet.

    damn.
