GeForce 4 MX240 stuck in 640x480 in Win98SE.

The computer I currently use for 'net access (not mine) has been minorly fux0red since a recent power outage: in Standard Mode, Windows won't load with a resolution higher than 640x480, 16 colors. The Display Properties window has limited options available (16, 256 and 16-bit color, max resolution of 1024x768) but Windows hangs and gives a "video card not installed" message when booting with any of the other resolution and color options. When attempting to reinstall the drivers, Windows gives a "no nVidia chipset found" error message.

My friend thinks there's a way to get Windows to display again in a higher resolution and color, but can't remember how to do it. The system is running Windows 98 SE with a Geforce 4 MX420 and, if it matters, a CTX VL950 monitor. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. (If my friend can't resolve the video issue by the end of the week, he plans to replace the card.)

Can't you just do a system restore? Boot into safe mode and try it.
