I usually like to leave my comp on all night while I sleep so i can download stuff without bothering anyone. problem is i don't wake up early enough to shut it off so we can't get any calls in the morning.

So I wanna know if there is a way i can disconnect from my isp (att) at a specific time lets say 7:30? so that the phone line will be available

Back in the day when I was still on dial up, I used Getright to disconnect in the morning but a quick search yielded this, a free disconnection program: http://www.slawdog.com/products/smartsd/index.htm.

Or you could just get a broadband connection. Then not only would you be able to be online all the time without hogging up the phone, but you'd finish downloads so quickly, they'd never take so long to download in the first place.

Some people just don't have that choice, TheSMJ. I have no land broadband choice, so I had to go sat broadband, which sucks for online gaming and has slow upload speeds, but at least it downloads fast.

Well, if you are not using P2P to download, you could get FTP Voyager and schedule stuff with the scheduler it comes with. It is not a free program, but is economical. The scheduler can be set to disconnect or to even shut down the computer when it is done doing downloading tasks. I figure you want the modem oiff but not the computer, right??? FTP Voyager can use IE's settings. IE can be set to hang up when the connection is no longer needed, also-- actually this setting ties into the Dial Up Networking.

You can use the rasdial command built into windows. Just schedule a disconnect every day at the hour you want to disconnect. You will want to issue a command like "rasdial myisp /DISCONNECT". The full usage is below:

    USAGE:
    rasdial entryname [username [password|*]] [/DOMAIN:domain]
    [/PHONE:phonenumber] [/CALLBACK:callbacknumber]
    [/PHONEBOOK:phonebookfile] [/PREFIXSUFFIX]

    rasdial [entryname] /DISCONNECT

    rasdial

rasdial is a command line tool included with Windows 2K/XP. Microsoft usage below:

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/rasdial.mspx

As I said before, just schedule a task with the Windows Task Scheduler to lauch rasdial to perform the disconnect.

Ok, with P2P the best choice is software to do the shutdown when port is not active for 5-8 min, and you need software that is able to monitor the port used for your particular P2P that is active. See how what you have works, and then try rasdial if you get cutoffs and resulting partila or corrupt downloads. If the P2P software can log, do that also, and look for things like unexpected disconnects in logs. Once you are sure things are good, kill the log and wipe\overwrite the file space it used, and let things be.

John D.-- also, Brilt, please be very careful how you handle P2P packages, virus scan them with very good updated AV software before using them. P2P IS being used to spread viruses now.
