Microsoft Pushes Back XP Update

edited April 2004 in Science & Tech
Microsoft has delayed the planned release date of its next update to Windows XP by about a month.
The software maker had originally said Windows XP Service Pack 2 would be released in its final form in the first half of this year, but a representative said on Wednesday that the release is now likely to come later in the summer.

Hmm I wonder if they'll manage to get SP2 out before Win XP "Reloaded" or whatever they are gonna call it is released.

"Reloaded" is really just speculation at this point, however any such release by Microsoft will be just Windows XP with SP2, so even if it was going to happen, it won't happen until SP2 is finished because it will need SP2's upgrades to be ready.

I can't wait for SP2, I'm itching for it, but I kind of expected Microsoft to take their time releasing it. Windows XP is pretty much the best the current OS architecture can get, at least on a basic level, it is the culmination of Windows 98 and 2000 all into one, it's the end of the tunnel with regard to what Microsoft has been striving for, all the way back since Windows 95.

Windows XP is great, the best OS by Microsoft yet, but, it is old technology and that's why Microsoft are taking so long with Longhorn, because it's not going to be just another Windows ME, a crappy extension of what already exists, it will be, or at least I hope it will be, it certainly needs to be, the start of a completely new generation of OS technology. The Windows 95 of this decade.

SP2 I imagine will mark Microsoft's last big fluff of the proverbial Windows XP pillow. Which I think is why they're taking so long sorting it out, because they know it will be the last shot in the arm for the OS before Longhorn comes along and takes over the Flagship status.

If however there is an interim version of Windows XP, between now and Longhorn, like I've said, I can't imagine it will be anything other than Windows XP with SP2, just slipstreamed together for OEM's convenience. I know what's been said, but I would honestly be surprised if we ever saw a retail version, if we did, again it would just be about convenience, nothing new would be brought to the OS. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but why would Microsoft spend money on customer convenience?

Either way, I'm looking forward to SP2, so far I like what I've seen. I can wait an extra month.
