title says it all. i got it to save money and am now kicking myself for it. however, i should be able to sell it to my brother soon lol :) so now, i need new ram. i want it to be dual channel. i should have somewhere in the neighborhood of $186. i don't really want to spend ALL of that, but i don't know a ton about ram. either 2x256 or 2x512, something that can overclock at least and extra 30 or 40 mhz / stick. i don't know if getting anything higher than pc3200 is worth it, because those are probably just overclocked sticks as well. what would be a good brand and speed to get?

EDIT: was thinking Kingston HyperX ...again, please let me know if over pc3200 is overkill

If you want to run 1:1 with that P4 2.8, then get some PC3500LL at least. Or get some PC3700 or PC4000 and live with running the more relaxed timings needed by those higher speed sticks at 1:1, you won't suffer too much in bandwidth loss. I'm running these Corsair XMS 4000 modules and they will run all the way up to around 275 fsb at spd and 2.8v.

so how come i'm running 1:1 right now, with crappy value junk and a single stick..? if i could find some hyperx 3200 anywhere i'd get it cuz it'd be much cheaper but i can't find it :(

\\edit: i guess i can find 2x256 at 3200 ... problem is, the timings are really tight and would end up costing me far more because of it

well i found a pc3200 256 for $69 ... if i got two of those, how far will they overclock? or would i be better spending the extra 5 or 6 bucks and getting 4000, but with slower timings? the 3200s are tight, 2-2-2-6-1 to be exact, so i think i would need to slow 'em to get a reliable 30 or 40 mhz overclock on the fsb

The timings don't matter so much with the P4 procs. Running 1:1 makes a lot more difference than running 2-2-2-6 on a 865 or 875 board. When I had my P4 2.6 in my IC7-G board I had it up to 259 fsb at 1:1 and my memory basndwidth was well up in the 6000 range in Sandra, if I remember right. Now, I'm having to run 5:4 with my 2.4, will see about getting some even faster ram later so I can eun 1:1 again.

i spose it'd come in handy for any new processors that come out that'll have higher bandwidth, but they'll prolly want ddr2...so i should definitely get the pc4000?

I would think so, since it's also one of the more affordable solutions out there too. I can't beleive how much ram has gone up. The sticks in the link I posted cost me $60 each in December.

my mobo manual says "Supports Dual Channel DDR 400/333/266 Dimm" ... does that mean it won't run ddr500? or that it will run it at 400 speeds?
