Dialup problems

edited April 2004 in Science & Tech
My uncles computer has a brand new Zoom V.92 dialup modem, which i bought from bestbuy. He uses localnet as an ISP. When i went to set up his internet connection, everything runs smoothly, except when it looks for his modem, which the localnet software cannot detect. And when i go to connect, it says theres an error ( some kind of 962 error with the harddrive i believe. Ill get more info on it as i look at it, but can anyone give me some assistance?

Well since I work for a ISP I can be of some assistance. First thing, what OS is on his computer? What kind of software do they use? Is it basically just a dialer that connects him? or does it go in depth more? like the aol software. Also, have you tried creating a basic dial-up connection using the dial in number, username and password?

If he is using win9x or ME, it could also be dial up networking is corrupt, I see this quite often at work, simply just un-install and re-install dial-up-networking if you have the 98 disk, you do not need one for ME.

Just some things to try for starters.

they run windows xp, but am not sure what software they use, ill try setting up a basic dialup connection first though. How do I go about doing that? I have no clue when it comes to dialup.

Click on Start>Connect to> Show all connections. You will then see "create a new connection" to the left of the screen. Click on this and then the wizard will start. On the first screen select "Connect to the internet" and click next. On the next screen select "Set up my connection manually" then click next. On the next screen select "Connect using a dial up modem" then click next. For the isp name on the next screen, just type in anything really, this is what the connection will be named, and click next when done. For the phone number, this is going to be the number that he dials into to get online, you might have to get this from his isp or his information sheet if they printed off one, also type the number in all together with no spaces like 7546661 for example. Click next. Type in his username and password, leave the three check mark boxes checked and click next. On the final screen you can put a check in the box to put a shortcut on his desktop or do it manually. After you hit finish you will be ready to connect.

    Hope this helps.
