Material Editor NOT OPENING!

OK No matter what I seem to do, in 3Ds Max 6, the Material Editor will not open!
I press "M" and nothing! I goto the Menu "Rendering>Material Editor" and nothing will pop up!! I DESPERATLY NEED THIS TO WORK!
