Have you tried running them as cable select? Also, are you putting them on an IDE cable by themselves?

Try just one hdd with nothing else connected to an IDE channel. The cable select that mudd suggested to would be another good start. You know the hdd works if it worked in your brothers computer.

Check for a BIOS update. 3.0 GHz boundary has left some BIOSes clueless, with weird results. Also, check your board and make sure you do not have HD cables plugged into IDE RAID connectors. THAT would cause a mess, until you understand RAID and the mode options in your BIOS for it. There are only two modes possible that will let you use the IDE connectors without making a RAID, and those have othr BIOS settings that have to mathc up with the choices. Try setting up box without RAID to validate system, then if you want set up RAID.

Yup, think John has this one - bios settings was my first instinct also.

Another thing that might be throwing you is if you are trying to run those drives with an ATA33 cable perhaps.
