The High Tech Low Down
By: Chris Angelini
It isn't a comfortable position, the one that NVIDIA is currently in. With a vile memory of the GeForce FX 5800 several months ago and accusations of benchmark cheating even more recently, the graphics giant needs something especially compelling to pull it back into the game it once definitively dominated. That product, code-named NV40, should do just that according to several sources.
At this point, the most reliable figures are the core and memory frequencies targeted by NVIDIA. By the time NV40 rolls around (late in 2003 or early 2004), the graphics processor should be running at least 550MHz, potentially on IBM's 130nm manufacturing process. Memory technology will have evolved a bit as well, and it looks like NVIDIA is expecting GDDR2 (or maybe GDDR3?) to be a viable option, even at speeds up to 700MHz. At that speed, we're looking at 44.8GB per second of bandwidth, assuming a 256-bit memory bus! NVIDIA can also be expected to incorporate support for the Vertex and Pixel Shader 3.0 specification.
Of course, early specifications are tricky to tackle. They're subject to change as unforeseen obstacles appear - NV30 was a perfect example of that. But as the year progresses and DX9 games become available, you can expect more detailed specifications of the cards that were designed to power Doom III.

GeForceFX 5900s are due to be out for retail any time now, and are already in the hands of several reviewers.
They do just what they intend; beat the 9800 Pro by 20%.
nVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra (NV35), the successor to NV30 (GeForce FX 5800 series), was released on May 12th. NV35 is strongly based around NV30, but with modifications to provide better performance and yield. The most notable improvement in the architecture of NV35 is a doubling in width of the memory controller from 128-bit to 256-bit, providing 27.2GB/s of memory bandwidth. The NV35 core also features nVidia's UltraShadow technology, which is designed to accelerate the types of shadow operations used by the Doom 3 engine. The GeForce FX 5900 features a 450Mhz core clock speed (slightly slower than the 5800 Ultra's 500Mhz) and 256Mb of 850Mhz DDR-1 memory (compared with 1Ghz DDR-II on the 5800 Ultra). The GeForce FX 5900 Ultra is expected to retail for $499.
Initial benchmarks show that the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra has surpassed the performance of ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro (even the updated 256Mb DDR-II version) under most benchmarks, most noticeably with early Doom 3 benchmarks.
Humm, I'm sorry I wasn't awhare that the following quote was old news...
I must have have my head in the sand as I haven't heard much about GDDR3?
Sorry...

The weirdest thing is that it has been available here in europe for over a month, but it seems that nobody wants to buy it.
2) There is no qualitative data, and you're a fool if you argue with verifiable quantitative data.
Backed into a logical corner, aren't we wuggaroo?
ok, on the serious side of things, i was goofing around. Both nVidia and ATi are spectacular companies. Its a constant battle between benches, and ultimatly, we win. They keep pushing themselves to the limits and it seems like every so often one will win over the other. Personally, i live ATi....i dont know why....i just do.
It's all about the Xabre II. SiS 340 1TB/S memory bandwidth w00t!
