Microsoft's missing AV software

Microsoft's plans to improve the security of Windows through the purchase of an anti-virus company almost a year ago appear to have moved on very little since the idea's original conception. The Register takes a look at the situation.
Microsoft is stuck between a rock and a hard place and it’s going to take some careful navigation to put its AV plans back on track. Alternatively Microsoft might decide the GeCAD acquisition (which probably didn't cost it a great deal) is a useful research project and push off in another direction. We know Microsoft's researchers are working on behaviour blocking (active protection) technology but don't expect anything for at least two years from this.

Expect some AV functionality in Longhorn, or at very least a Microsoft AV app -- how robust remains to be judged. BUT, back in DOS days they DID have AV in their software packs. So, AV would be a returning thing for them and not something unprecedented for them.

On the surface, little has materialized. They are emphasizing the innards of their O\S more right now. But, the dedicated killers were not purchased from thrid party folks, they were done in-house. And, GeCAD made one of the conditions of sale that they would not wind down their support suddenmly, rather as AV subscriptions already sold expired. I was GeCad customer at the time of sale. They had excellent AV stuff.

You cannot deeply integrate security things that are new to the platform when core things are in flux, so best time is when a new full verison is released. Yuo canot do final betas until the core is stable, and Longhorn has some very interesting and fairly major changes in it on several fronts. Bet, they are going to wait for Longhorn for full AV implementation-- and it will fit like a hand and a good driving glove with Longhorn core structures or massively bomb.
