CD drive showing previous disc inserted...

FormFactorFormFactor At the core of forgotten

I went to install some games on a friends PC and ran into a LOT of problems.

Lets use FarCry as an example here. FarCry is a 5 cd game, so I started with disc 1, which seemed to go OK, disc 2 also went OK but then when it came time for disc 3 when I put it in WinXP showed that disc 2 was still in teh drive.

No matter what I did I could not get his PC to recognise that disc 3 is in the drive, It kept saying disc 2 was in. I tried ejecting it from within windows, and tried resetting the autorun options to default.

The same thing happened with Battlefield Vietnam, although the error message was different I suspect it is related to the drive not recogniseing when a new disc is in.

He is running WinXP Pro SP1
Asus a7v333 mobo
Athlon XP 2200
Cheapass 52x cd-rom.

I acually sold him this machine, and it worked fine when I had it... I did however re-format, and re-image it before selling it to him.

Any Ideas on how to fix this? I know Ive seen this problem before but dont remember how to fix it.

Hmm tried changing the via chipset drivers perhaps? Try removing the drive in safe mode and then let windows reinstall it. You might also try changing the slave / master settings. I had this happen on my SCSI win2k system several times, each time resulted in a reinstall (thankfully i ghost often). Its probably some stupid mixed hardware / windows driver deadlock or something retarded like that.
