North America's Fastest Supercomputer Debuts

edited May 2004 in Science & Tech
Three companies - Linux cluster vendor California Digital, Quadrics, and Intel - have just announced that they have successfully deployed the most powerful Linux supercomputer ever built: a state-of-the-art turnkey solution for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory codenamed "Thunder."
A Linux cluster deployed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and codenamed "Thunder" yesterday delivered 19.94 teraflops of sustained performance, making it the most powerful computer in North America - and the second fastest on Earth.
Between Lawrence Livermore lab and the Oak Ridge Lab it looks like our (USA) national laboratories are beefing up their computing power significantly. -KingFish
