Microsoft has offered and is mailing an IT Administrator's Security Guidance Kit. This is a freebie. This is not for end users who are not working as IT Admins, per se. Microsoft says, in theis Sring 2004 kit, that end users should look here for security guidance info:
http://www.microsoft.com/protect
and IT admin level people and Developers should look here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/guidance
or use the info in and look in the MSDN areas of Microsoft.
Looks like the http://www.microsoft.com/security area is being broken by knowledge levels and by responsibilities. I got my admin level kit today after a LONG backorder after responding to a pre-publication offer for this free item, and it has some security eval tools on CD and a tree of security guidance info with an info viewer on CD.
O\S prereqs to use it are:
2000 SP3 or higher.
OR
XP SP1 or higher.
OR
Windows Server 2003.
Hardware rpereqs are fairly minimal, PIII or better, 64 MB RAM or greater, CD-ROm drive of any sort usable by these O\Ss above, and a screen res minimum of 800x600.
You will need a browser and Adobe Acrobat Reader, I hjave seen if those are on this CD or not yet.
Figured would let all you know the obvious limits stated by Microsoft and the links givne in this kit so you could at least use appropriate links to your needs and knowledge levels if you do not need the security guidance kit info and tools per se. For admins, the Microsoft part number for this kit on CD is X10-46268.
