OS Won't Load on one computer but will on another

edited May 2004 in Hardware
i'm building a new pc
when i was done with it
i put my hard drive with xp installed on it into my new computer
as far as it will go is to bios
it won't even boot in safe mode
but when i put it in my old cpu it boots up properly

also...i'm thinking this is related to it
after being on for awhile on just a black screen (cuz the os won't load)
i hear a loud noise coming from inside the case

it's an AMD processor, and it's snapped in correctly
never had this problem buiding any cpus in the past
anyone have any ideas what it could be?

much appreciated

Windows doesnt like it when you change all the hardware at once. You might be able to get it to work by uninstalling all the hardware devices in windows on your old box, then moving the hard drive over. Actually, reformatting is probably the better option.

What type of loud sound is it?

yeh windows kinda takes a crap when you up and switch motherboards on it. i've never even tried it, so i'm not sure how to do it, but i know you *can* get it to comply, but you might have to bake it cookies and give it a bottle or something

You also need to set the boot priority in the bios to actually boot offa the hard drive you've installed.

That's not good. I've done the HDD swap thing before, but it's not the best way to do it, just install XP without formating the drive if you want to save the files.

The others have given you good advice for the boot problem. As to the noise, you might want to check to see if there are any cables or wires too close to a fan. Also, if everything is brand new, you might have gotten a dud fan. Can you check with the side panel off the case to see if you can pinpoint the sound?

One other thought: I've had CD drives make lots of noise when trying too hard to read a disc. I mention this because if the system isn't booting off the HD it may be trying to find a bootable CD instead.

    Good luck! :)
