G'day all, Just a quick one..........can XP pro run a repair on XP home edition. Not one of my HE copies will repair my drive.

Dragon thinks it may be the hard drive, but I really don't think so. Particularly as the same problem happened with another box this morning. I have just finished reformatting with XP Pro and it is working like a champion.

If I can I just want to save myself sometime, and maybe get some sleep.......LOL

Thank you in advance for any help

Regards

Sally

IF you set up an administrator PW in Home, have had the recovery console on the XP Pro CD work for things like CHKDSK. The Pro CD wants to login to XP, using the admin PW.

IF no admin PW, then not as easy or well can the XP Pro CD stuff fix things. AND, you willl be outside the recovery console and have to find things on CD to use them.

I dont think it will work. There are some differances in the OSs that will cause some mixups when repairing.

If you want to elliminate the HDD, go the that drive's manufactire website and find a utility of theirs to check the hard drive.

    Hi Mark & John

Thank you for replying to my drama.........I did try to reply earlier but my server went down for a couple of hours......grrrr!!

Anyway to cut a long story short (which is something I'm not known for......LOL) I found out the hard way they are not compatible........I tried it. Everything went cool till what was supposed to be the repair option came up.........only this had a request to do something with the partition......took the cowards way out F3>F3 and returned system back.........Still haven't been able to run a repair with HE strikes me unlikely that all three OEM versions (new) are corrupt but I suppose anything is Possible....

I had two machines go down, both with the same MOBO since posting this I have reformatted the first with Pro and she is working like a champion............well the second........still haven't made up mind what to do.........Options!! 1. Reformat 2. Take to puta hospital. Hmmmmmmmm!!!! Reformat sounds cheaper.....

The boys have come to my aid in the Emergency section and I have a lot of options available to me from there.........though REFORMAT does sound the easiest........

I am trying to recoup some lost sleep before I tackle this problem further........for now just a small update.......Tried repairing with HE repair again......failed!!! Bugger....LOL

I have been able to login once or twice and have uncountable chkdsk's completed only the problem gets worse and worse.....Now I have "HARD - SYSTEM ERROR" I've seen this once before shortly following the error I got the 'BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH"......

Definately sounds like reformat time..........I'll sleep on it.........maybe reformat is the only option.........$'s to take to hospital......LOL

    Kind Regards

    Sally
    (Not so short after all...hehe)

Hi Guys, thanks for helping out. Being at work at the mine does not help with the problem. Still got 12 days to go before i get home.

Don't know if the mobo is the problem or the H/D. All parts were purchased new and are only a few months old at the most.

Sally has gone without sleep for too long and has had to give it a break for a while. Did suggest if it all became too much, to leave it till i got home.
Not that i know how to fix it, just for moral support and do any heavy work.

    Cheerio
