Drive not found on main rig - works on other

A long time ago, when I switched motherboards, I tried to move my 2 disk array (on my HPT RocketRaid 100 PCI card). One of the drives refused to be recognized by the HPT card once installed on the new board, however.

I moved them into a spare computer and they worked. So, I just shared the array over the network and forgot about it for a couple months.

So here I am, trying to finally take care of it the right way. I backed up everything on the array. The problem drive still won't show up on the HPT card, or attached to the mainboard. It showed up on my external USB/1394 enclosure, however. I quick-formatted both the drives (one still on the HPT, one in the enclosure). The problem drive was successfully formatted, but it still won't show up on the HPT card (says no drive after spending a minute or two trying to find it) or the mainboard (stalls while trying to find IDE drives).

What's the deal?

Anybody? I've only got about 8 more hours before my roommate gets home and he's gonna want his HD back that I backed everything on to :)

This is my last shot to get the RAID 0 working again unless I get access to another big HD, since he's moving tomarrow morning. :( I'll have to settle for getting the two drives to work seperately and get my stuff back off his drive if I can't get it to work.

Sorry I didn't see this in time buddy. Nevertheless...

Have you since confirmed the troublesome drive works fine independently?

No worries mate. I should have thought to put this in the emergency help theread since I was pressed for time :)

I ended up just having to put the troublesome drive in the external 1394/USB housing. It worked fine in there and in one of my spare rigs, but wouldn't work in my main rig (connected to the mobo or on the Highpoint card) or the other spare rigs.

I'm thinking it may be RMA time for that drive. This is the refurbished drive that Dell sent me a couple years ago when another drive failed. Until recently it has served me well, but it may be time to put it out to pasture, as we say down here in Oklahoma.

If you can get your hands on a diagnostic tool or something from the HD's manufacturer (if they have one) and run it to see if there are any obvious problems with it, that may enlighten you to the problem. Doesn't take long to do.

It's a Western Digital. I ran the Data Lifeguard Tools and everything was OK. That's my only concern - I think they may require errors on that in order to do an RMA. Guess I'll find out.

If you're sure the drive is flakey (and it's not something else, like a hardware compatibility problem) look up the error codes on their website. One of them (sorry, can't remember the exact number) is for when "the test could not finish in the expected amount of time".

I've never had 'em squawk when I RMA'd one with that message.

    Excellent :D

Are they going to test the drive when it gets there? I'm just afraid that it'll work for them when it didn't work for me and they send the flakemaster back to me.

I have no idea. I just know that they've never said boo when I had to do it that way. About three months ago I returned my daughters drive. At first it wouldn't boot all the way on maybe one try in five. Then one in three. Then it went dead. I drove up and picked up the computer to get it fixed (210 mile round trip to pick it up, and again to take it back to her).

Wouldn't you know it? The S*O*B passed the test about five times in a row and ran fine for two days, even though I was rebooting it about every 1/2 hour. I put a brand new cable on it and checked all the connections. Still fine. I was just about to give up when it finally choked on me. I ran the test again and got the error I mentioned above. Then I sent it back and got a new one.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it worked when they tested it. Probably got relabeled as "reconditioned" and sent out to some poor schmuck somewhere.

    (Maybe you'll get it... ;D )

Can you back the data off it and run the long destructive test on this HD while it is in another box??? ? Is the BIOS recognizing it right versus what the utils say it is???

When the BIOS recognizes it at all (only one motherboard of mine will, that and my external enclosure), it recognizes it correctly. When it was on that motherboard, I went ahead and wrote zeros to the whole thing without errors.
