non destructive disk errors

I just went over to help my aunt with her computer and when you start up the error message comes up on screen and you can't do anything, just tells you non destructive disk errors and says to hit any key to continue, when you hit a key it stays the same. there are no disks in the drive???? please somebody help me! she is using windows 98

    sounds like her HD is borked, i'd say it needs to be replaced

    Not quite yet. First, boot off your Windows XP CD and go into the recovery console. From the command prompt, type CHKDSK C: /R

    it will probably find and correct the errors.

    If that doesn't work, find out who manufactures the hard drive (Western Digital? Seagate? Hitachi?) and then download the appropriate diagnostic tool from their website. It will tell you for sure if the HD is failing or is dead.
