Just so you have a better understanding of what might have happened...

If you are using DSL or Cable Internet, you are basially on a LAN. Your computer is networked to everyone else who shares your IP family. For instance, if your IP address is 123.456.789.005, then anyone from 123.456.789.001 to 123.456.789.255 will be considered to be in your IP family. Now, if one other person in that IP range has a computer with the same name and workgroup name as yours, you may see this error message. Windows XP uses a random naming suggestion method when you set up the OS, but 2000 and earlier OS's do not. By default, those OS's used MS-HOME as the default workgroup (if you have the Home version of the OS, not the Pro.) Now, if you happened to buy a pre-built computer from the same store as someone in your IP Range, and that store pre-named all their computer builds the same thing (like "Customer") or if you installed the OS and picked a fairly generic name like "Mycomputer", then there is a distinct possibility that you and someone else in your IP Range have the same computer name, hence the error message.

As Primesuspect indicated, give your computer completely random and hard to duplicate name, and you should not see this error again.
