Help please.

edited May 2004 in Hardware
I am new to this site, was referred by a friend.
I am having problems with my pc when playing games(Everquest)my cpu seems to reboot and then says disk read error and sometimes says doesnt not detect a hard drive.I've recentley replaced drive and got new OS (xp pro).

I am currently running the memtest but it has been running 4+ hours,is this normal? What could be my problem? Amd 1800+ 1.47 ,shuttle board(unsure of model)somewhat old ,gforce fx 5200 agp verto 128.

I am going to remove the cmos battery like i saw in another thread after the memtest and see if that helps.

Thanks for any help .

Also think i posted this in wrond forum...Oops.

Memtest continues running until you shut it off. As long as it goes through all 7 tests without errors, your memory is fine. You might be having problems with the IDE controller on the motherboard, perhaps.

I quit the memtest and it said i had missing or corrupt files in sys32.tried using disc and recovery console and it said no hd found.Im to the point of taking it to a shop but they never do anything cept charge you a bench fee and solve nothing.Which is why i came here.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks again.

when it says no hard drive detected, what happens if you hit the power switch on the power supply and pull the plug for 5-10 seconds. when i was having this same problem, this was how i was able to fix it. problems like these are hard to diagnose, but i agree with GHoosdum that it could be your ide controller. it could also be your power supply however

it also could be a bad ide cable, and let's hope your new drive is not bad also. but first try changing the IDE cable first, because that's the easier solution if it is the ide cable's fault.

and if it's your ide controller, then you would need to buy new pci ide controller. but let's try the cable first.
