There are a few ATi things that run that are services that can be disabled in the normal services management area. One of the is for hotkey polling, another is for lock up recovery and there is possibly another that does general things too. The names are normally slightly different though, so it looks like from some sort of driver mess up two instances have been installed. Check your services.
yeah it's just ATI vid card stuff- I have it running too; I think it's the program that runs that little gray bar on your desktop (the one I turn off upon startup)...BTW I have a Radeon 9200 and this toolbar automatically loaded itself- I haven't even looked at what it does.
Thanks ...turned them off thru taskman and then ran msconfig and disable a few things and also changed a few services to manual ...rebooted and both services are now gone thanks.
I just never noticed these until the cat 4.5's and was wondering if one were a mistake.
I had it running twice as well, ati2evxx.exe. Killed it through administrative tools/services. They've been there for a while. Not just since the 4.5's. I've been killing those services as far as I can remember. (But then when I built this computer the 3.8's were new, so it hasn't been that long, really.)
First off, let me say that I am a noob to this board, and I want to thank all who give their time for free to help us...I found this site looking for a fix to omega search, and thanks to youse guys I got rid of it.
Now that I've reduced you all to tears--->
The one that I wonder about is svchost.exe. I have three or four running on my side, and my wife's profile only has 2. Also I started running zone-alarm, and one of them wants to go on the internet. No website gives me a real layman's terms version of what the hey this program does...
Just don't try and close them. I think for one or two of them windows says it's a critical system process and cannot be terminated... somethin' like that. Once I decided to try and close them and one of them was remote procedure call... I don't know exactly what that does, but basically everything critical to the system needs that to run to be able to run itself. It gave me about 30 seconds to "save my work" before it shut itself down.
Yes, that is the one running under the user "Local Service". All the others are expendable, but will cause problems if shut down (unless they are slack ones if you haven't tweaked your services already).
