Answers are contained within your quoted question. Not all installs are "critical". Some are at your discretion but won't hurt you if you don't install them.

I have not done any Media Player updates in a while because I thought they would stop allowing me to uh..shall we say copy for backup purposes all of my CD's by enforcing some kind of copyright protection...I notice some new CD's at the store have a sticker saying that they have "anti-piracy technology"...??

Just steer clear of any Driver Updates, they're bad news.

Guyute, the anti-piracy technology, as far as I know, is on the CD and not allied with Windows Media Player.

And it sucks. I've had to make analogue recordings of a few CD's I've bought, just to convert to mp3's. Needless to say, it affects sound quality, but not too badly.

The only issue I have with media center and DX9 is this. I have had to overlay an older DX on quite a few boxes simply to get a stable box after doing so, where the video cards were not designed for DX9. The most major changes in DX9 are the 3D calls. A card that is not able to handle newer calls than it supports, needs translation software, and DX9 does nto have much of that. It meets feature set demands. One reason drivers for many cards that support DX9 do not exist is that the cards' GPUs simply cannot support DX9. Prereq for DX9 3D is finding a card or driver for same card that supports that. I have seen this hands-on here and in the field many times, with each major DX change starting with DX5 onward, and had many users find that overlaying the DirectX that came with the video card on CD OVER the upgraded DX to next major version fixed random hangs more than it hurt. Think about your video card's needs first before putting DX9 on your XP install. DX9 and Media Player 9 are stated as uninstallable, and that is about 90% true without breaking your XP install. Definitely make a full system backup or rollback point if there are no DX9 supporting drivers for your card, before you do a DX9 upgrade from DX 8.1 to 9. Cards are remarkably dependent on the DX major version that they were tuned to support.

In my lab which is on a linksys acess point with linksys nics I install all Critical, Recommended Updates, and Drivers except for the following Recommended Update which conflicts with my wireless setup and brings my entire lab down to no connection whatsoever ...so I avoid it like the plague ...others may have different results with other hardware and software drivers.

I also try to stay clear of installing any driver updates for my mobo or vid card from Microsoft too, ever since I had it totally fubar a stable Win2K Pro install by using Windows Update to install a newer Via mobo driver. I ended up having to format and re-install.

Yep, that's what happened to me, only with XP Pro. Once bitten...
